Have you ever had to apologise that you need to leave work early to pick up your child from school? Or, like many others, struggled to make work fit around family life rather than forcing your family fit around your work life?
That is why The DIY Dad began.
Our founder, Jim, had a business wreaked by the covid pandemic. It no longer earned him the income he needed to help keep his family secure and traditional jobs fell short of offering the flexibility that would allow him to be the primary care-giver to his kids. What started as a passion for DIY and lending a hand soon became Jim’s way of making a difference, as a handyman. For 3 years he has balanced out his income and childcare by working around his family as The DIY Dad. Over those years he has met many people, some who are no longer physically able and need someone who can take on many small tasks that have built up over time, to those who are too busy working themselves and simply don't have the time to keep with jobs around the house. Either way he has been out there helping anyone who needs it.
It was the realisation that he was living a lifestyle many people only dream of that sparked the idea for The DIY Dad network. Why should he be the only one making use of years of DIY experience, skills first learned from his own dad, then sharpened as a parent fixing things around the house? And all while being there for every school run. That flexibility didn’t just benefit him, it allowed his wife to pursue her own career as a community support manager, helping others live more meaningful lives.
We want to bring this lifestyle to more people, allowing them to take control of their lives in ways they may not have believed possible. If you are a capable DIYer then this lifestyle is possible for you! You can help those who need it the same way that Jim has been for years. The DIY Dad network connects those in need of DIY help with those Dads who want to earn and be present for their families.
But our mission doesn't end there, far from it. We hope that through our network we are able to empower Dads to work more flexibly, which will lead to more flexibility for the whole family and overall an increased level of gender equality in both work and family lives.
